Yoga Class - Flexibility, Strength, Posture, Breathing, Mood
Ben-a-fit Yoga by Kate Hansen, Certified Yoga Instructor
Yoga has been practiced for more than 5,000years, and currently, close to 11 million Americans are enjoying its health benefits. The benefits obtained by the continuous Yoga practice are well known, Yoga works on all aspects of the person: the physical, mental, emotional, psychic and spiritual. Yoga generates good health, contributes to longevity and improves a general well-being sense. The basic principles of the Yoga practice include proper Asanas (poses), Pranayama (breathing), relaxation, diet, positive thinking and meditation.
The various poses used while practicing yoga are known as Asanas and have been developed to exercise every part of your body. No special Yoga equipment is needed to practice but it’s recommended to purchase a Yoga mat, which sticks to the floor better then a Yoga blanket. While practicing yoga it is a good idea to wear loose fitting, cotton clothing without socks. All you have to do then is relax, switch off and stretch.
Yoga benefits
Flexibility:
You are never too old to practice yoga. Don't worry, you will not have to stretch like a gymnast but you will increase your flexibility by safely stretching your muscles. The release of lactic acid that builds up in your muscles causes stiffness, tension, some pain, and fatigue.
Strength:
Yoga will not provide the strength conditioning that other forms of exercise, yoga will provide some strength and endurance benefits. The standing poses, especially if you hold them for several long breaths, build strength in your hamstrings, quadriceps, and abdominal muscles. Poses that strengthen the lower back include Upward Dog and Chair pose. When practiced correctly, nearly all poses build core strength in the deep abdominal muscles.
Posture:
With increased flexibility and strength comes better posture. Most standing and sitting poses develop core strength. That's because you're counting on your deep abdominal's to support and maintain each pose. With a stronger core, you're more likely to sit and stand "tall." Another benefit of yoga is the increased body awareness. This heightened awareness tells you more quickly when you're slouching or slumping so you can adjust your posture.
Breathing:
Because of the deep, mindful breathing that yoga involves, lung capacity often improves. This in turn can improve sports performance and endurance.
Most forms of yoga emphasize deepening and lengthening your breath. This stimulates the relaxation response.
Stress Reduction:
Even beginners tend to feel less stressed and more relaxed after their first class.
Among yoga's anti-stress benefits are a host of biochemical responses. For example, there is a decrease in antihistamines, the hormones produced by the adrenal glands in response to stress. Lowering levels of hormone neurotransmitters -- dopamine, norepinephrine, and epinephrine -- creates a feeling of calm.
Concentration and mood:
Concentration and the ability to focus mentally are common benefits you'll hear yoga students talk about. The same is true with mood. Nearly every yoga student will tell you they feel happier and more contented after class.
Heart:
Yoga will help lower blood pressure and slow the heart rate which will help individuals with high blood pressure, hypertension, and heart disease.
Other medical conditions:
There may be other benefits of yoga that are now being studied. As research continues, this age old therapeutic practice may prove to be beneficial to overall wellness and a feeling of well being.
The only way to be certain of all that yoga can do for you is to try it for yourself and see.
